This week Green Day confirmed that they will return to the stage to play at SXSW in Austin Texas, after front man Billie Joe Armstrong leaves rehab following his relapse in 2012.
Billie Joe was last year re-admitted into rehab after an incident at a radio show in Las Vegas. The band’s set was cut short, infuriating Billie Joe to the point of obliterating his guitar in front of a crowd of Justin Bieber fans. It was clear the famed front man, also a recovering alcoholic, had relapsed. The singer spoke out about the incident and his drinking recently, saying…“I couldn’t predict where I was going to end up at night.”
All this brings a bit of a tear to my eye, figuratively not literally obviously, but nonetheless it is still a sad circumstance. I remember listening to Green Day’s early records; Dookie, Warning, Insomniac and Nimrod. All absolute classics, and Billie Joe’s distinct punk rock vocal sound leads the charge in all their greatest hits.
This is why I am glad the guys have returned once more, I’ve drifted away from their more recent music, but it is never a joy to see a star I hold in such high esteem at such a low point. The American superstar trio do return to the UK soon, on June 1st at Arsenal’s 60,000 seated Emirates Stadium. Check our awesome site for tickets.
